Enjoy Beaches, Sports and Wildlife on Family Vacations in Florida

When people think of Florida for a family vacation, most of them immediately think of Orlando. Home of Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Wet ‘n Wild and much more, Orlando is ideal for family fun. But it isn’t the only place in Florida where families can enjoy themselves. The state has much more to offer, from sandy beaches to the Kennedy Space Center. Of course, the theme parks are ideal for thrill-seeking families and Disney lovers. But if your family likes to enjoy their time away at a more sedate pace, then there are other options for your family trip.

It would be impossible not to start with Orlando, which has to be the most well-known destination in Florida for a family vacation. Most people could probably name at least one or two Orlando attractions because there’s just so much to do. It’s incredibly easy to find Disney vacation rentals too, with places tailored for perfect family vacations. If you’re not enjoying one of the Disney World attractions, there’s SeaWorld, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens. For families who are more into learning than they are roller coasters, the Kennedy Space Center is fascinating and exciting. It’s NASA’s launch headquarters, and space lovers will be thrilled by seeing real rockets and getting a chance to meet someone who’s been to space.

Key West

Florida’s beautiful beaches are much more suited to families who like to take their vacations at a slower pace. Key West is probably the best known of the Florida Keys, and it has miles of glorious beaches for family fun. Sit back and relax on the sandy beach, while the kids build castles and splash in the sea. It might not be SeaWorld, but the Key West Aquarium was the first of its kind in America. Sporty families will go mad for the watersports on offer around these parts, and there are history and culture available too.

The Everglades

Florida’s Everglades are like nothing you’ll see anywhere else. In this unique landscape, you’ll find rare and even endangered plants and animals that will fascinate both kids and grown-ups alike. Alligators and manatees swim in the waters, and very lucky families might even catch a glimpse of the Florida panther. Take a thrilling ride through the Everglades on an airboat and marvel at all the wildlife that the area has to offer.

Sanibel Island

For even more nature and adventure, visit the peaceful island of Sanibel. This quiet island certainly won’t be as full of tourists as somewhere like Orlando. Famous as a prime spot for shell collecting, you’ll also find beautiful beaches and might spot some dolphins on a boat ride in the ocean. Visit the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge for alligator sightings, or enjoy kayaking, golf, tennis, biking and other sports on the island. With a limited number of hotels and other places to stay, Sanibel is a bit more exclusive than other destinations. Away from the hustle and bustle of other parts of Florida, your family can relax or explore as they see fit.
